How to identify your window hardware

Getting the exact part right first time saves a return. Work through these in order:

  1. Window type. Casement, awning, hung or slider? The links above are grouped the same way.
  2. Numbers on the old part. Look for a stamped or printed number before you remove anything, then search it on our site. Balances, for example, are often stamped with their spring strength: a stamped 4 means a 4 lb spring.
  3. Measurements. For casement operators, measure the arm or link-arm length. For awning operators, fold the arms closed and measure the channel end to end. For locking handles, measure centre to centre between the two mounting screws (84 mm is common on vinyl windows). For balances, measure the jamb channel and weigh the sash.
  4. Handing. Many casement operators and some locks come in left- and right-hand versions, and those listings name the hand. If you can't tell which you have, send a photo.

Still unsure? Search by photo for an instant match, or post your photos to Identify My Part and a real person will match the exact replacement.

Repair before you replace

A stiff crank, a sash that won't close or a lock that no longer pulls tight rarely means the window is finished. Replacing the operator, hinge or lock costs a fraction of a new window, and most of these parts install with basic hand tools. Our step-by-step video guides show how.
